Preparing for Your ENT Surgery (Pre-Op Instructions)

Following these pre-operative instructions will help reduce your risk of complications and optimize your results.

Medical & Medication Guidelines

Medications to Avoid: Stop taking blood-thinning medications or supplements (including aspirin, NSAIDs, and certain herbal products) at least 7–10 days before surgery. You’ll be given a list of what to avoid.
Prescription Adjustments: If you’re on blood thinners or diabetes medications like Metformin, Dr. Allen may coordinate with your prescribing doctor or anesthesia provider to safely adjust your regimen.
Stay Healthy: Eat well, hydrate, and limit tobacco and alcohol. Continue using prescribed allergy medications or immunotherapy as advised.

Fasting and Clearance Instructions

Fasting: Stop eating or drinking at midnight the night before surgery (unless told otherwise by anesthesia).
Pre-Op Clearance: Patients over 50 or with existing conditions may need clearance from a primary care doctor, cardiologist, or pulmonologist before surgery.

What to Expect on Surgery Day

Arrival & Check-In: Arrive early to check in, meet with the care team, and change into a gown.
Anesthesia: You’ll receive general anesthesia or sedation based on your procedure and health history.
Reminders: Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Remove contacts, piercings, and makeup. Bring a list of your current medications. Make sure you have someone to drive you home and help you for at least 24 hours post-op.

After Surgery: Post-Op Recovery & Care Instructions

Healing well is just as important as the procedure itself. These tips will help ensure your recovery is safe and effective.

Pain Management & Medications

  • Medication Use: Most patients manage pain with over-the-counter medications like Tylenol or Advil. Prescription pain relief may be used short-term.
  • Nausea Relief: Nausea can occur after surgery; anti-nausea medications can be prescribed. Begin with clear liquids and slowly return to a regular diet.

Wound & Nasal Care (if applicable)

  • Nasal Irrigations: Saline rinses are essential, especially after sinus surgery. Use a NielMed squeeze bottle with distilled water and pre-mixed salt packets as directed.
  • Nosebleed Prevention: Avoid nose-blowing, hot showers, bending over, or strenuous activities for 2–3 weeks. Use Afrin sparingly if bleeding occurs.
  • Cleaning: Neosporin, hydrogen peroxide on a Q-tip, and nasal decongestants may help with crusting or minor irritation.

Activity & Lifestyle Restrictions

  • Rest & Activity: Plan to rest for the first week. Avoid lifting, flying, and vigorous exercise for at least two weeks. Most patients can return to light work within 7–14 days.
  • Follow-Up Care: You’ll attend several post-op visits with Dr. Allen to monitor healing and receive in-office nasal cleaning, if needed.
